Brazilian Shorts 2023

This year, the Clermont Short Film Festival selected four Brazilian short films in its competition. With the precious support of the Brazilian embassy and Spcine, Kinoforum is organizing the Brazilian presence at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival.

This action is divided into several parts: a stand at the market to promote Brazilian shorts, a market screening with films from the city of Sao Paulo, the coming of Brazilian filmmakers, an online delegation with festivals from all over Brazil and a Brazilian party.

Rose, a professional dog walker, has recently occupied a vacant house which she now calls home - the realization of a dream. While claiming to take care of the property until the return of the landlady, the new "tenant" creates intimacy with the house and develops a fascination for the absent woman.

São Paulo International Short Film Festival | Kinoforum

Created in 1995, the Kinoforum Cultural Association, a non-profit organization, carries out activities and projects that support the Brazilian audiovisual and promotes citizenship formation focused on cultural and social inclusion. One of the main projects of the NGO is the São Paulo International Short Film Festival created by Zita Carvalhosa in 1991, one of the main events for short films in South America. The 35th edition of the festival will be held in from August 24 to September 3, 2023.

SPCINE | São Paulo Film Commission

Spcine – the city of São Paulo Film and Audiovisual Company - oversees the development, financing and implementation of programs and policies for film, TV, digital games, and new media, fostering the economic and creative potential of São Paulo's audiovisual sector and promoting its socio-cultural impact. In Clermont-Ferrand, Spcine presents a screening of short films from São Paulo and supports the coming of a Brazilian delegation.

Olhar Imaginário | Production House

An agile and creative production house, in tune with racial and genderdiversity. It has already launched 9feature films on the market, acclaimed by critics and the public. In 2020, released the series Cena Inquieta, of 26 documentaries about peripheral group theater produced in Brazil and the feature-doc Dentro da Minha Pele premiered on Globoplay, which made a career in major international festivals. Under the coordination of documentary filmmaker and sociologist Val Gomes, it develops anti-racist audiovisual projects, such as the Anti-racist Collection series, launched at the end of 2022. The production company is managed by filmmakerToni Venturi and producer-editor Tiago Berti.

Spcine is promoting a screening at the Short Film Market with five short films from the city of São Paulo, which is one of the cities with the most film productions in South America. This selection reflects the diversity and dynamism of São Paulo cinema.

Zita Carvalhosa

Zita Carvalhosa is the founder and director of São Paulo International Short Film Festival, one of the main events dedicated to short films in South America. She is also the head of Associação Cultural Kinoforum, which manages the festival and also organizes audiovisual workshops for communities in São Paulo since 2002. Zita is also a producer and head of Cinematográfica Superfilmes, responsible for dozens of short and feature films since 1983.

Denise Jancar

Denise Jancar, director of PROMOVERE, represents Brazilian contents for the foreign market and distributes international content in Brazil. She attends international markets as Jury andMentor and coordinates Curta & Mercado, a meeting of professionals at Curta Kinoforum - Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival.

Guto Gomes

Guto Nakashian Gomes is a brazillian director, editor and screenwriter based on São Paulo, Brazil.Graduated in Cinema at Faculdade Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), Guto works in several areas of audiovisual, from music videos and advertisements to fiction, experimental and documentaries.
His work is mainly focused on directing actors in a human and close way. He is very interested in family, psychological and regional issues of the country in which he lives. His short film Ararat can be seen at the market screening “Brazilian Shorts From Sao Paulo”

Kay Sara

Kay Sara is an actress, director, singer of ancestral songs, performer, activist and militant of the indigenous cause. She was born in the village of Iauaretê, located on the border with Colombia, in the State of Amazonas.
She is the daughter of natives of the Tariano and Tukano ethnic groups. She is the co-director and lead actress of Tapuia, a short film part of the market screening “Brazilian Shorts From Sao Paulo”

Val Gomes

Val Gomes holds a Social Sciences degree and has worked on issues such as domestic violence, gender equality, and human rights.She wrote, directed, and edited the documentary Tecendo Histórias e Bordando Novos Caminhos in 2005, as part of a project that incentivized exchanges between women from the outskirts of São Paulo and Paris between 2009 and 2011. She made her film debut as co-director of the feature film Dentro da Minha Pele released by Globoplay in August 2020. The film had its international premiere at the 33rd IDFA - International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, Netherlands 2020, and won the audience award at the Festival Latinoamericano de Bordeaux in 2021.

Anti-Racist Collection

The Brazilian racial and social issue from the perspective of anti-racist thought in 8 documentary episodes that provoke a critical reflection on the impact of colonialism until today. The episodes feature little-known historical black figures who acted in a wide range of fields of knowledge. The work's. language comprises afro-futuristic graphic animations, photographs, and films by renowned Brazilian directors, as well as testimonials from eminent black intellectuals. Directed by Val Gomes and produced by Olhar Imaginário, this collection was made possible thanks to a partnership with Instituto Unibanco.

#1 – The Myth of Racial Democracy, 2022, Doc, 11'

During the 20th century, "racial democracy" created the idea of harmony between races in Brazil, although in reality it never existed. The myth was created by the Brazilian elite, who invested in European immigration and population whitening by segregating black men and women in Brazil.

#2 – From the Slave Ship to Abolition, 2022, Doc, 14'

Brazil endured 350 years of slavery, from the arrival of the first slave ship to the signing of the Lei Áurea in 1888. Let us rescue the Afro-Brazilian resistance and discover about the backstage of this story.

#3 – Quota Is Not Alms, 2022, Doc, 13'

Blacks were forbidden from studying in 1854. A phenomenon that would only be partially corrected 180 years later with the racial quota policy law, which still enrages a segment of society.
A glance at the black population's political struggle until racial quotas were implemented in universities and public tenders.

#4 – Race, Work and Rights, 2022, Doc, 13´

When the Brazilian Republic was founded in the nineteenth century, the majority of freed blacks worked in menial jobs. Whites continue to fill the majority of vacancies in good schools and command positions in the twenty-first century. Why has the black population's situation has changed so little over 134 years?

#5 – Urbanization Like Apartheid, 2022, Doc, 13´

In 1897, temporary installations of soldiers who fought in the War of the Canudos became the first favela in Brazil, marking the beginning of the social apartheid that still persists today. Is it possible to break down the invisible wall that divides whites and blacks in Brazilian cities?

On the one hand, black women worked to build Brazil's wealth. On the other hand, women like Zacimba Gaba, Angola's warrior princess, and Marielle Franco, who was murdered in 2018, have played pivotal roles in Brazil's history through political and cultural activism. The majority of the population is unaware of, or has never been aware of, the racism that is ingrained in institutions and family life and maintains white people's privilege. How does the permanent exclusion of Afro-Brazilians function?

What is the white heritage of enslavement and racism? How can white people be convinced to use their power to democratize relationships in the school or workplace, as well as in the construction of citizenship in Brazilian society?
